Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) Base

Applecroft SpLD Base is situated in Applecroft Primary School in Welwyn Garden City.  The Base serves 34 Primary Schools and 2 Special Schools in Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield and the outlying villages.  It is one of 10 primary SpLD Bases organised as part of the Children, Schools and Families outreach provision to support local Primary and Special schools.

Advice and support from Base staff enhances the schools’ capacity to successfully meet the needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy.  This is provided through school focused consultations to discuss general concerns and pupil focused consultations to give specific advice for pupils who have been referred to the Base.

The Base team comprises of Janet Gammage and Chris Smith - Specialist Teachers and Joint Base Leaders, Anita Gardner - SpecialistTeacher and Jo Barth, Admin Assistant.

An INSET programme is planned and delivered termly. This offers a range of training for both Teachers and Teaching Assistants. Fliers and booking forms are sent to schools, but can also be accessed via the link on this website. We hold termly Open Afternoons for displaying new materials and offering informal advice on their use. Commercial publishers often display new books and other resources at these sessions.

 The Base is also a resource centre. Our resources focus on reading, spelling, handwriting, writing, and numeracy and include books, games and ICT.
