Who We Are

The Applecroft SpLD Base is one of the 10 Primary SpLD Bases in Hertfordshire. The County SpLD services exist to support schools in meeting the needs of pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) and has evolved within the framework of the SEN Code of Practice and the Local Authority's strategies for raising achievement.

Applecroft serves an area in East Hertfordshire focused on Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield and surrounding villages.

The Base consists of a Base Leader, two Base teachers and a Base secretary. The staffing complement is the equivalent to 2.4 full time specialist (SpLD) teachers. We serve 36 Primary schools of which 2 are Special Schools. The team is Jane Kitchen (Base Leader), Janet Gammage (Base Teacher), (Chris Smith (Base Teacher), Jo Barth (Base Secretary).

What We Do

The Applecroft team works hard to meet the needs of schools in relation to pupils with Dyslexia. We have very good professional relationships with the schools we serve and maintain formal and informal contacts to ensure school staff feel their needs, and those of their pupils are met to the best of our ability.

The County Guide to Primary SpLD (Literacy & Numeracy) Outreach Services provides the parameters of our formal role but over and above we aim to be a pro-active and responsive centre of expertise and excellence in relation to the field of SpLD (Dyslexia) and education.

The Applecroft Base is primarily a service for schools and their pupils and we provide a wide range of support in respect of children with SpLD (Dyslexia). We also provide training sessions. Our objectives are to enhance understanding of Dyslexic learning styles and develop the school's ability to understand and meet a pupil's specific learning needs.
