BookTrust Time to Read Packs for Reception Class Children

Time to Read is a key opportunity for schools to link with Hertfordshire Libraries so children starting on their reading journey can discover the exciting range of quality, inclusive books available to borrow.

We now have the My First Library card, especially created to appeal to children aged 0-5 (Birth to, and including, reception children. See My first library card on www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/libraries for more information. On their library card children can borrow from a huge range of quality picture books, beginning to read stories & fact books, plus longer stories and information books. We buy books monthly so families can choose from the latest titles - helping to build children’s reading skills, imagination, wellbeing and empathy and enabling children to see themselves in books across our diverse collection.

Research show that libraries boost the early home learning environment of all children but particularly disadvantaged children. Regular library use in the early years means higher literacy scores at KS1 (age 5-7). Library use doubles the chance of a young person enjoying reading and reading every day.
