Design Technology (DT)

Our Curriculum:

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):

In our nursery and reception classes we follow the EYFS statutory framework, which sets out the seven areas of learning, including Understanding the world. It is at this stage, that children will begin to develop their imagination and fine motor skills necessary to generate products and enhance their curiosity of what they can build, make and create. In the EYFS at Applecroft, we have designated areas for children to explore their own design-based interests through child initiated learning such as: wood work, construction and exploration of tools.

 

Key Stage One and Two:

At Applecroft School, we deliver the National Curriculum for Design Technology through the Design Technology Association's 'Projects on a Page' scheme of work for KS1 and KS2.

 

In Key Stage One (Years 1 & 2) children learn to:

  • Evaluate current products and thinking about how they want to produce their own product
  • Design purposeful products for themselves, based on particular criteria
  • Generate ideas through talking and drawing
  • Select from a range of tools, equipment and materials
  • Build structures, thinking about how they can be made stronger and more stable
  • Explore mechanisms (levers, sliders, wheels)
  • Evaluate their finished product against the design criteria.

 

In Key Stage Two (Years 3 - 6) children learn to:

  • Evaluate a range of existing products
  • Design a functional product according to a particular criteria
  • Discuss ideas and develop annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes and computer-aided designs
  • Select from tools and equipment to produce products
  • Understand how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce structures
  • Understand and use mechanical systems in their products, for example gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages
  • Understand and use electrical systems in their products, for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors
  • Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products.

Design Technology Curriculum Intent:

Design Technology can transform the way we think and act. Now more than ever, we value our designers, engineers and architects who shape our world and plan for our future. DT is at the heart of our society and the foundation of our community; through the innovation of new environmental products or the design of life-changing inventions. Globally there is so much more to do to make our planet a better place and improve the lives of our community. 

 

At Applecroft School, we strive to provide opportunities for children to develop their individual talents and discover their passion through learning about design and technology. Our curriculum provides children with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing, making and evaluating functional products. We feel it is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work. Children will learn to design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. 

 

At Applecroft School, we passionately believe in the importance of Design Technology for our children and their overall experience of the world. At our school, teaching DT means teaching our children to be risk takers, innovators, problem solvers and trailblazers. They can turn an idea into a reality and believe that anything is possible.
